– Spiritual Warfare – The Biblical Way and the ERROR of “Binding satan”
“Spiritual warfare” means different things to different people. The term itself is not found in the scriptures, but the concept is taught. Spiritual Warfare is a very important aspect of the Christian life because we engage in it every day. The Bible makes that clear. But many teachings on spiritual warfare being circulated these days is not rooted and grounded in the teaching of scripture. Any practice or technique of spiritual warfare which has no scriptural warrant is always suspect.
The key to successful spiritual warfare is finding Biblical balance. Some of us are taught that if we “bind satan” in the name of Jesus, threaten him, or if we pull down spirits in the air (preventing their activity), they will leave us alone forever – to no longer tempt us or try to lure us away from our faith. This is simply not true.
Maybe some of you can identify, but I was taught long ago to use the phrase, ” I bind you satan in the name of Jesus” as if it was a magical formula under the guise of it being a “spiritual weapon.” I was taught that I had the authority to do so because I have Jesus. I have learned by studying scripture and applying it to my life that the success of overcoming satan and his demons are more than just words. The truth of the matter is satan is already bound by the Gospel of Jesus Christ and as believers we bind him with our righteous living (2Cor. 10:6). The more I studied my Bible the more I realized that my view of demons and how to deal with them was not based on Scripture, but on stories, tradition, and the experiences of others. I have learned that error mixed with truth ensnares the believer and I pray for all who are ensnared to receive the truth and continue in God’s Word which has the power to make us free (John 8:31-32).
The purpose of this teaching is to teach that there is a warfare going on and we fight it every day; that we have been given weapons and strategies by the Father who is our Commander and to give the true meaning in context of the terms “binding and loosing” in the book of Matthew.
Biblical spiritual warfare
Scripture teaches us that true Biblical “spiritual warfare”is simply indirect confrontation with satan our principle enemy. According to the whole of the Bible, we are not supposed to take it upon ourselves to step into satan’s territory to pick a fight with him and we should not seek to communicate with him to show him how big and bad we are in the Spirit. Spiritual warfare must be done according to the rules of combat of our Commander, Jesus Christ. Our source of authority should not be experience, tradition, or stories. It should be the Word of God. We are admonished in Scripture daily to stand firm against (resist, oppose, withstand) satan with the tools God gave us (obedience, prayer, His Word, His Spirit and etc. – 2 Cor. 10:4&6; Eph. 6:10-18). These tools are the weapons God has established for us. Scripture teaches that God has provided everything that we need for life and godliness (2Tim. 3:16,17; 2Peter 1:3); therefore the Word of God should be our final authority.
Spiritual Warfare According to the New Covenant Scriptures What does the Bible teach?
2 Tim. 2:15 “Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching] the word of Truth.”
*Please note: I understand this is a sensitive topic and that it goes against much of what we have been taught in the church. I am not here to cause division, but I am examining commonly known practices in light of Scripture so that Scripture can correct and instruct us (2 Tim. 3:16). I understand that we must be on our guard, contending for the faith which was once delivered to the saints because certain men have crept in. (Jude 3 and 4). We are warned in 1 Tim. 4:1 and 6 that in the latter times some will turn away from the faith giving attention to deluding and seducing spirits and we are admonished to be worthy stewards of Jesus Christ, ever nourishing our own selves on the truths of the faith so that we can TRULY live victorious in Jesus Christ.
As I said earlier, “Spiritual warfare” means different things to different people and many engage in spiritual warfare differently. Some are Biblical and some are not.
2 Cor.10:3-5 – “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
Eph. 6:10-12 – “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole amour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
I don’t know about you, but I have heard saints do the following and I was taught to do so as well:
*Please note: The “binding” that I am referring to is by saying the words “I bind you” with the intent of spiritually preventing the devil from any activity. The rebuking that I am referring to is the practice of threatening satan with words such as: we stomp on your head and other similar abusive language.
- To bind the devil and spirits in the air during public and private deliverance sessions.
- To bind the devil in prayer before presenting the Gospel. The belief is that this will improve the likelihood of that person trusting Christ as his Savior.
- To bind satan from upcoming events protecting it from the influence of the demonic.
- To bind satan and his demons from certain geographical locations, such as a new house a person will be moving into, a new church building, or a particular location in a city or neighborhood.
- Binding unfavorable situations and circumstances in our lives (poverty or a lack of something, persecution on our job or at school and the struggles of life).
- To bind the struggle of sin in a believer’s life (the “spirit of lust”, “the spirit of envy, gossip, or disobedience”) .
What does the Bible tell us about satan being bound (as in being unable to work or do anything to anyone)?
Revelation 20:1-3 (AMP)
“Then I saw an angel descending from heaven; he was holding the key of the Abyss (the bottomless pit) and a great chain was in his hand and he gripped and overpowered the dragon, that old serpent (of primeval times], who is the devil and satan, and [securely] bound him for a thousand years. Then he hurled him into the Abyss (the bottomless pit) and closed it and sealed it above him, so that he should no longer lead astray and deceive and seduce the nations until the thousand years were at an end. After that he must be liberated for a short time.”
Revelation 20: 10 (AMP)
“Then the devil who had led them astray [deceiving and seducing them] was hurled into the fiery lake of burning brimstone, where the beast and false prophet were; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.”
What does this teach us?
It teaches us that satan will be bound for 1,000 years shortly after Christ’s Second Coming. Following the Millennium, Satan will be deposited into the lake of fire for all eternity.
In interpreting Revelation in light of the whole of Scripture what are we taught?
1. We are taught that satan will be bound (him and his activity) for 1,000 years shortly after Christ’s Second Coming. No other time before this will anyone be able to bind him or prevent his work of leading astray, deceiving and seducing. Even though God is sovereign, God cannot lie (Heb. 6:18) and God will permit the devil to act until his time is up.
2. We are taught that Jesus has bound satan and his demons already with the message of the Gospel in that he can’t stop the Gospel from going forth(Matt. 16:18-19). Also satan no longer has dominion over us through the persuasion of sin by Christ’s finished work on the cross (1 John 3:8).
3. We are taught even though satan is bound by the Gospel he is very much active. 1 Peter 5:8 teaches us that satan is “like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour”. Satan will seek and continue to seek to destroy anyone who will let him (hence “whom he may devour”). He has that authority in the earth because God gave it to him, but only for a short time.
Therefore, the idea that believers can remove satan and his demon armies permanently from spheres of influence, from tempting us, afflicting us, harassing us, and from trying to distract us from serving and living unto God is simply not true. In addition, the teaching that most of us have, which is to “bind him in the name of Jesus,” is not found in the Bible. Take demons for example since binding and loosing is primarily used in this instance. If we study the ministry of Jesus, the idea of binding a demon should automatically raise some questions. Jesus never tried to bind a demon (stop their activity), He cast the demon out (Matt 8:16; 8:39; 9:33; 10:38; 12:28). There was a time however that Jesus did bind or forbid a demon to speak (Mark 1:34), but the end result was to cast him out.
How are we instructed to overcome satan?
1. Peter instructs us to “withstand him; be firm in faith against his onset – rooted, established, strong, immovable, and determined, knowing that the same sufferings are appointed to our brotherhood (the whole body of Christ) throughout the world.”
2. Paul teaches us to put on the whole armor of God. Our weapons include truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation and the word of God (Ephesians 6: 14-17).
3. 1Tim 1:18-19. It teaches us that we must wage a good warfare holding fast to faith and having a clear conscience. And we know that we must take control of our thought life by refuting arguments, theories and reasoning’s and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the true knowledge of God. We are to lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ (2Cor. 10:5 Amp).
4. James 4:7. We are taught to be subject to God. Resist the devil – stand firm against him and he will flee from us.
We are not taught anywhere in scripture to “bind” or “rebuke” him, but we are constantly taught to STAND FIRM against him – the same way Jesus stood firm against him while being tempted in the wilderness. He stood against him with the Word of God and we must do the same.
What is the mandate for the practice of “Binding” satan? What does that concept really mean? What does the Bible say about those “mandates”?
The “mandate” or idea for “binding satan”is based on the what I believe to be the misinterpretation of three passages: Mt 12:29; 16:19; and 18:18. The context reveals that Matt. 12:29 was an illustration of Christ’s personal power over Satan. Jesus is making the point that He is the stronger man. And the other scriptures Matt. 16:19; 18:18 are in the context of fulfilling God’s will on earth, including church discipline. It has nothing to do with demons messing with us and our stuff (things carnal believers are concerned about).
What does the binding and loosing concept really mean?
In the Jewish culture that phrase is an expression meaning to declare forbidden, to declare allowed or to declare lawful – this idea of binding and loosing has the force of the judicial notion of forbidding and permitting. The power for binding and loosing is something that the Jews of that day used. They bound or loosed an individual in the application of a particular point of the Law and they did this to provide rules or to discipline.
What are some applications of the Law that the Apostles (using the binding and loosing concept) declared lawful or unlawful?
1. The use of circumcision. Circumcision was forbidden because it is now the heart that is circumcised and not the flesh. (Romans 2:28-29
2. Thy declared forbidden the teaching that Christians (converted Jews) should abide by certain Old Testament rites. (See the entire epistle of Galatians)
3. The distinction of Jew and Gentile in Christ (Act 10:28 and Gal. 3:38)

What are the keys of the kingdom?
While I am on the topic of discussing “spiritual warfare” tactics, I was also taught to rebuke the devil. According to Scripture only God had that authority.
Who is given the authority to rebuke?
Nowhere in Scripture are we taught to rebuke the devil or his demons, but we are taught to cast them out and resist
them. The New Testament views rebuking as the sole prerogative of Jesus as an expression of His Lordship and sovereignty over the spirit realm. The only acceptable condition for a believer to rebuke anyone is when we lovingly correct a someone who has fallen into sin (Lk. 17:3; 1 Tim. 5:20). Throughout the New Testament, rebuke is understood as the sole prerogative of the Lord. This is why Michael said, when challenged by Satan, “The Lord rebuke you” (Jude 9). 2 Peter 2:10 teaches us that we are not to “revile angelic majesties.” The earlier context indicates that these self-willed false prophets were engaged in reviling fallen angelic majesties—demons. We are taught in 2 Peter 2:4-12 that this is something which is characteristic of false prophets, so it is a warning for Christians not to engage in such practices.
We are warned twice in Scripture against reviling (uttering reproaches, assailing with abusive language) and such practices.
If we are warned not to do these things then, why do so many professing Christians regularly engage in such practices?
Both passages give us the answer.
“These, like unreasoning animals … reviling where they have no knowledge …”(2 Pe. 2:12). “But these men revile the things which they do not understand …” (Jude 10). This is an example of the ignorance of God’s Word which leads to wrong practices. When these practices don’t bring about the our desired outcome it discourages us in our faith and causes us to doubt God and some of us grow weary and drop out of the battle. While practicing this method as well as many others such as drawing invisible blood lines everywhere, I became frustrated and I began to question it. I thought, “if I am constantly binding satan and rebuking him, why is he still loose to bother me? All of the binding and rebuking should cripple him. ” I knew then that I have to dig in my bible and begin to study. I was tired of participating in the wild goose chases of beliefs and practices that opened me up to attacks from the enemy rather than the clearly taught instructions from God that protects me from the enemy.
What are we taught in Scripture concerning dealing with demons?
Demons are Fallen Angels who willfully sided with Satan and became his followers, to carry out his will instead of Gods. When confronted the darts, wiles and persuasions of the devil we are taught to resist him. Now, if we are dealing with a demon-possessed individual [the direct, inward control by a demon(s)] we have the power and authority in the name of Jesus to cast out the demon. As a matter of fact, we have power to overcome all of the power of the enemy (Luke 110:19).
Conclusion
It is to our benefit to follow what is taught in Scripture and it it to our detriment if we follow anything else.

This Present Darkness, by Frank Peretti.
Released in 1986, he introduces an all-too-common phrase among Christians, “I rebuke you, Satan,” which is invoked during prayer. The mystical approach of throwing rebukes around has no basis in Scripture. Just the opposite is true. Again we are not to rail against principalities and authorities in the spirit realm (Jude 8-9. And we can see from His mention of Michael and the devil that God does not look favorably upon those who rail against any authorities including Satan’s. Yet the Church is filled today with teachers who tell us how they’re going to “stomp on the devil.” They call him names and rail against him as if to demonstrate that they have power over him.
The Believers Authority, by Kenneth E. Hagin.
He is the acknowledged “father” of the modern Word of Faith Movement and is viewed by charismatic Christians globally as a true prophet of the Lord Jesus Christ.
*Please note: I did not read these books. I am just giving you information that can possibly shed some light on this practice as it relates to how it originated.
Kenneth is said to have believed in the following beliefs:
1. Christians are little gods.
2. Jesus didn’t pay for our sins on the cross and he had to finish the job of atonement in hell.
3. If Christians are not healthy and wealthy it is because of their lack of faith or knowledge.
4. Christians have control over their lives by the words that they speak. If they speak sickness and poverty they will be sick and broke. Therefore, if a Christian speaks blessings and healing they will be healthy and have wealth.”

Sadly, many believers are being lead astray by false deliverance teachings which promise instantaneous victory over one’s problems by a timely rebuke of the devil. This misleads people from the Biblical path of exercising endurance or patience in overcoming their trials. As a result, many believers are not developing the kind of proven character they need to handle and overcome these trials to the glory of God. Everything we go through is for our betterment, not our detriment.
Romans 5:3-5
“And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”
James 1:2-4
“My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.”
God wants to reproduce Himself in us. He wants to perfect our character so that our lives will be a direct reflection of what is written His Word. This character-building approach is illustrated by Paul’s thorn in the flesh (2 Cor. 12:7-10). The thorn is described as “a messenger of Satan to buffet me—to keep me from exalting myself”(12:7). It is quite possible this messenger was a demon. The Greek word for messenger is “angelos,” the word for angel. Paul did not bind or rebuke the “messenger of satan”, instead, he “entreated the Lord three times that it might depart from me” [12:8] Yet God did not grant Paul’s request, but said, “my grace is sufficient for thee.”
Do we have power in the name of Jesus? Yes, we do, but it is to be exercised within the will of God and what is expressed in Scripture. The Lord was more interested in building Christ-like character in Paul as a true display of His power (12:9) than in teaching him how to fight the devil the way some of us have incorrectly been taught.
Let’s be sober and alert. It has become common to attribute a natural or human explanation to most problems, but as believers we know that there is a spirit world because satan is the prince and power of the air (Eph 2:2). We have to have a spiritual warfare perspective so that we will be inclined to test situations to ascertain whether or not there is something more than natural influences at work. As spiritual warriors we must have an alertness to the activity of the enemy so that we can actively resist him as scripture teaches us.
As warriors we must bring discipline to our thought life, actions and the fact that we have to continually build ourselves up on our most holy faith and praying in the Holy Ghost (Jude 1:20). If we allow these areas to be compromised, we will not be effective in resisting the enemy by standing firm against him. We must also take sin very seriously, because sin always gives the adversary an advantage and we know that we can do nothing that is effective in our own strength. Our strength, authority, wisdom and discernment are dependent upon our close walk with the Lord. We should always remain focused and guard ourselves against distractions caused by problems and troubles that appear. These distractions are designed to take our eyes off the Lord.
In closing the concept of spiritual warfare is a pro-active approach to our faith meaning it is our responsibility study the Word and do it. Scripture teaches us that true Biblical spiritual warfare is simply indirect confrontation with satan our principle enemy. Indirect confrontation implies that we do not fight with satan and his evil forces by approaching them directly (I am not talking about casting out a demon). We confront them by applying indirect means and the ways that God has established for us.
The battle is the Lord’s!
We do our part in warfare by applying and fulfilling our required indirect roles which secures our standing before God and allows Him to directly act on our behalf. Jesus Christ has prayed that we be kept “from the evil one” (John 17:15). Further, the Bible promises us that “God keeps him and the evil one does not touch him” (1 John 5:18). Attacks from Satan against us becomes God’s battles as we obey and fulfill the roles required of us, not by verbally threatening satan and his demons which we are taught not to do (Jude 8,9; 2 Peter 2:4-12).
True Christian spiritual warfare is living a life of consecration, obedience and fellowship with God in such a way that we enable God to effectively deal with evil working against us by believing and doing what the Word says and against other people by prayer and supplication. It is by our continued abiding in Christ that makes us daily overcomers. This is seen in the outline of our spiritual armor given in Ephesians 6:11-18. Now It’s true that Satan and his demonic spirits (fallen angels) are the primary enemies we wrestle against. It’s also true that God has given us certain strategies in the Bible of confronting these evil beings whose full-time ministry is scheming to ruin our lives. Working outside these biblical guidelines only increases their effect in our lives.
Nowhere in the scripture do we see Jesus or the apostles address satan in their pryers. When Satan sought to sift Peter and finish him off, Jesus prayed to God. Jesus prayed that Peter’s faith would not fail.
“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers,” Luke 22:31-32.
Jesus Christ prayed to the Father for Peter’s deliverance. His spiritual warfare prayer or deliverance prayer was addressed to God not to Satan. How much more should we follow His example of indirect confrontation?
Scripture teaches us how to have victory over the devil and it is by putting on the whole armor of God (Truth, Righteousness, Gospel of Peace, Faith, Salvation, and the Word of God). All these are aspects of consecration, obedience to and fellowship with God. The Lord uses our consecration and obedience to overturn Satan’s hold over matters in our lives and the lives of those we’ve been assigned to minister to –spiritually, socially, materially and physically. We will be ready to punish every act of disobedience once (when) our obedience is complete -2 Corinthians 10:6 (emphasis added mine).
I know this is a hard pill to swallow but we must study saints of God. We may do things with good intentions but if we are not careful we can be walking in disobedience and error. May the Lord bless you and increase you in His knowledge.

This teaching is much needed. I grew up in a church where sound teaching and preaching was given but along the way i realised that I had accepted some erroneous teachings about spiritual warfare much of it from Word Faith preachers/teachers. I thank God that the foundational teachings I had caused me to study the scriptures on many issues and when I measured what these teachers said against what scripture clearly says I realised that I was accepting false teaching and needed to repent.

I am surprised that you did not mention memorizing and speaking out Scripture. When Yeshua was being tempted in the desert by the adversary, each time he reached into the arsenal of his mind, and pulled out an appropriate passage from the Torah or the Psalms. If he had not memorized these passages he could not have recalled them, compared them with what the devil was offering and speak them out. I think this model is top notch for spiritual warfare.
I have personally used it to drive away thoughts that I know Satan was trying to get me to agree with and accept as my own. I have also witnessed it working on my unbelieving husband. I would leave the room and out loud quote the promises in God’s word on his behalf. Of course he did not know I was doing it, but I would see an immediate change in him. One caution, this must NOT ever be used as an attempt to control someone’s behavior. God will not honor that kind of prayer. He wants us to set the captives free, that is why we war. We battle so that someone who is bombarded by Satan’s attacks will gain some relief and be able to exercise their own free will. They may then still choose the wrong path, or when the noises in their head get muted for a bit, then they may make a better choice. Praise God for his power to restore our free will from the one who tries to enslave us!

Thank you for the post. Five years ago I met a ‘Prophetess’ in Singapore who claimed to be involved in sprititual warfare. She was the most mysterious charismatic powerful woman I had met in my life.
I found myself in a situation that only a miracle would do. To cut a long story short she taught me what she claimed I needed to save my kids etc. In the list was ‘binding satan and demonic spirits over the city and the courts – in fact most of the ‘wrong’ things you have written about.
I was not a man of faith – more an angry agnostic at the time – but I needed a miracle. Lawyers said “You will need a miracle!” I am not very bright and only knew One in the business of miracles so I decided to ‘give God a go.’ (I am a better man now – I hope) .
I felt I had no choice but to fiollow the prophetess’ instructions and I have many court documents over years to prove the miracles that happened – not one but many.
After I won I had a call from the Prophetess the next day. I was shocked that she was more suprised than anyone that ‘it’ had worked. She even said it was the first time it had worked in her ten years of ministry – I was pleased she hadn’t told me that before I started.
Sadly she turned out to be a cult leader and a false prophetess – BUT I had the miracles I needed. My cynical atheist barrister said, “You have an unfair advantage,” because he could not believe I won either and marvelled at how it happened – none of it was coincidental.
I admit I bound the words of a judge and lawyers ‘in the name of Jesus’ as she instructed. I felt and looked foolish doing it at the time, but the end result was I WON the unwinnable case and NO one disputes it was a miracle. I am only writing this because all believers should be reassured that GOD READS OUR HEARTS – we can get it wrong and if our intentions are right He will still answer our prayers – Praise Him!
Brother Graham, you are sooooo right and thank you for your post. God knows our heart and He knows if we are really putting our trust in Him. He often does things like that so that we can have history with him and nothing in the world can ever take our experience with Him away. He also uses certain situations to draw us to Himself especially if we previously had doubts about Him or did not believe. He proves Himself to us. Then after we have put our trust in Him and after we believe God, He requires that we go on to perfection and rightly divide His Word and obey what is written. The method may have been wrong as you have said, but God saw past the error and saw that you were putting your trust in His ability to give you a miracle. God promised to deliver those who put there trust in Him and for that we praise Him. God bless you.

Well said and divinely inspired! The words Jesus spoke began, “It is written”, which is non-argumentative because the words are the words of God. There is no defense against the word of God except complete submission and obedience. Legal right because the only words that have legal authority in the World to change anything is the Word of God Jesus the Christ the only begotten Son of the Holy Father.

I do pray and I do read my bible and I believe in Jesus Christ as my saver and I love him so much, because he is the only father I have know in my entire life. For my father dead when I was only a year old.
But, as prayerful as I am, ‘any thing I touch is turning sour for years now. I have been praying and ask God to tell me exactly where I am going wrong in my spiritual life. For, I am experiencing one problem after another. I am a hard worker and yet I am living in poverty.
As of today I am going to resist the divel’ and stand fame to his temptations. (Our weapons include truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation and the word of God)Though its not easy but my the lord help me. Amen

I thank you for this article on binding and loosing spirits. I admit I was one of the wrong users. I started questioing what it really meant to bind and loose after starting a self bible study, Breaking the Power by Liberty Savard, who in this study say binding and loosing are opposite to what I have thought it to be. She say when you bind, you bind what is right and good in your life, you loose evil spirits and evil itself away from you. This has me very confused because like I said I have prayed binding and loosing. But after reading your article and a few other who say basically the same, I think I see what it means more clearly .
I know my reply is quite late in comparison to the writing of it. so here are my views on the matter.
I believe that the word does not tell us to bind and loose but it does tell us that we have been given authority to cast out demons. this is the word of God mat 9 :32 and 10:1 it is here for a reason and we dont want to decieve believers into thinking it is not even biblical.
I dont know about the laying on of hand for deliverance but we will naturally be under the curse from our past sins because we have prayed a prayer of forgiveness we still have to recognise the things that are operating in our live with the permisssion that We gave them. Also our family members have passed down things that need to be actively broken, Sins of the fathers can be passed to the third and forth generation.
I think also that as you are quoting and reading from the bible, so too you should read the books that you quote from, it is not fair to say that someone has said something if you are not sure yourself.. to be truly analytical in your approach take alot if referencing and that means rreading for yourself. The problem I have is that sometimes we can sow a seed of doubt and we want to encourage believers to “get understanding: for themselves. I did notice that you do encourage others to study but it is misleading.
I myself have the believers authority by kenneth hagin..he does say we are gods..but as it is quoted in the bible, he has not changed a thing. I did not read that the attonement was paid when he went to hell..anyway the word says that we can ask for anything (with condition re:james) and that positive confession harms no one, just like the word says death and life are in the power of the tounge; what you sow you shall reap, there are so many false doctrines about and we all can have the tendancy to fall into it.

I am in no wise deceiving believers into thinking that our authority to cast out demons is not biblical. This blog entry has nothing to do with casting out demons. This article is about the unbliblical practice of “binding and loosing” satan or demons in the way mentioned in the post. This binding and loosing is based on not dividing the Word of truth rightly.
On the matter of sins of the father being passed down to generations is another teaching/view that most of us have that is not correct. Ezekiel 18:20 teaches us that children are not punished for the sins of their fathers or parents. We all are responsible for our own sins, “The soul who sins is the one who will die. The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son.” We are all punished for our individual sins, not for the sins of someone else. The sins of the father view is often taken from he verse Exodus 20:5. Basically this scripture is talking about the effects of a parents choice to worship idols,“You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me.” This verse is talking about the consequences of worshiping idols and how this disobedience can be felt generations later since children who are raised in such an environment would likely practice similar idolatry falling into the same disobedience and its effects can take generations to correct (when someone steps out to follow the Lord). Even though God does not hold us accountable for the sins of our parents, we sometimes suffer as a result of their sins as Exodus 20:5 illustrates.
As it relates to quoting from the bible, I have provided scriptures in the post. If I have missed something please quote me so that I can fix it for the benefit of us all. Also please point out where I am being misleading. Thank you again for commenting and for your response in advance.

I had prepared this same message. You have confirmed it. Many preachers are misleading people in this way. They are preaching that we can bind satan in the name of Jesus. It shows the lack of their Bible knowledge. Many come to preach without Bible knowledge (2 Peter.3:16).
They peddle the word of God without knowing the exact meaning of every word ( Acts. 20:29-30, 2 Cori. 2:17, 4:2. Mtt.22:16 ). 1 Thimothy. 4:1, 2Thimothy. 4:3-5, 2 John.4:1 are being fulfilled in christianity. God bless you dear.

I can attest that there are false teachers/prophets. I have come across a whole slew of them and b/c of this, I have been deeply hurt and had major spiritual battles!!! It is SO important where you go to church – check out their doctrine/beliefs before you go to listen to them. I have had no support or help and I have been deeply wounded. I know what the Bible says about the last days, but I was not brought up in a Bible based church nor did I have a whole lot of training on spiritual issues. I would warn anyone to read the Bible for all it’s worth.

I love your teaching. I moved to south florida hoping to find Sheperds that teach like this, because that is what I was used to when I lived in Virginia. I am now just waiting on God to place me under leaders that teach scriptually sound like this.
I have come home tonight from a Church I visited , where binding and such was prevelant, just about everything, Uncle Tom Cobley and h is dog were . bound, cast out, rejested and burned . Fire Fire..DIE DIE DIE DIE !!!.
It struck me that a room full of Christians shouting DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE seemed a bit unbiblical to me. ( had to check that I had not walked into a ‘terrorist organisation by mistake !!!)
So I raised the for Biblical confirmation of the practice.
I am not a Church person and thought ‘binding’ was scriptual, I have used such words myself in the past, thought DIE(ing) Saten was not.. So I am home and looking for the answer, which I would not be doing IF I had not asked the question….and questioning seems to be another avenue frowned upon by those with dubiouse practices, as I note some leaders, like the Pope are now cementing their positions by claiming ‘Divine Appointment’ , so questioning..or ‘ rebellion’ as they are renaming it, is akin to herasy rather than being a good berrean !. and ‘proving all things’.

Based on your article I guess that’s why the Bible says don’t seek revenge or repay evil for evil because that just makes the “spiritual warefare” worse if the correct way to we fight it is holy living.
Your teaching on binding of demons is faulty. In Mark 16:17 Jesus said that those who believe will drive out demons in his name. If a believer can drive out demons why can he not bind these demons?

Mark 16:17 and the scriptures used to “bind demons” are totally different and are of a different context. Casting and binding are not the same. We cannot make scripture mean what we want it to mean, in order for it validate what we want to do. In the post, according to scripture and in context with the whole entire Bible and chapter, that is the true meaning of binding and loosing. It has nothing to do with casting out demons. It if did then Jesus would have done it and Paul and everyone else would have done it in scripture. They didn’t, because that is not what it means. Also, people have been “binding and loosing” demons for years. My question then is why do they keep coming back? If they are bound through binding, then they should stay bound. I pray that God will give you understanding of His Word and increase you more and more as you study.

Hey everyone. Just found this on a google search because I have been wearing myself out for a year, binding everything I can possibly think of…hoping I didn’t miss something. Then casting out everything possible. Then taking authority over everything. Then pleading the blood over everything. Oh…its like a full time job! I knew this could not be right. It was all my effort! Finally, last night in prayer is was as if the Lord whispered to me…….”what are you doing? I have already taken care of everything for you. You are doing MY JOB!”
Today, I am the most relaxed I’ve been in a year! Didn’t Jesus tell us to take his yoke upon us? Where we would find rest for our souls? Now I have found rest and I am letting him do his part.

Another reason against ‘binding’ spirits over a city of group of people is the fact that God gave us ALL a free will and who are those individuals who proclaim to take away people’s free will to choose who they want to follow? Just an idea…..
Great reading, but now I’m a little afraid. I heard on CBN by Pat Roberts that the right thing to say was exactly the thing you’re telling us is not good to say, such as I rebuke and bind the spirit of lust and cast you away from me in the name of Jesus. I’ve used that about 3 to 4 times in the last month thinking it was good. Have I done any damage to myself and how would I know if I have? Can I fix it if I have?

Don’t be afraid. Everyone has said and did things that the bible does not teach out of ignorance (simply not knowing). Most of what we all were taught was based on tradition (like rebuking and binding). In addition is sounds like we are doing something in the spirit and it puts us at ease. I believe that those who continue to do this, because they simply know no other way, is doing it in all sincerity. I did. I did this, not because I read in scripture that it is to be done, but because I heard my leader say these things and use certain scriptures to back it up (scriptures that were taken out of context, thus giving us the wrong interpretation, resulting in wrong actions). However just because we do it in sincerity does not mean that it is right. Error is error and God loves us so much that he sends correction. Correction comes in many ways, but once we hear the truth and search the scriptures for ourselves to see if those things are so, then as believers we have the responsibility to act on that truth and depart from error. It is by God’s Word that we are corrected and instructed (2 Tim 2:15). We have to remember that the devil can transform himself into an angel of light (2 Cor. 11:14). I am not saying that Mr. Robinson is a devil, but when we watch Christin TV, know that everyone does not have God’s agenda at heart (money, greed, popularity, doctrine of devils, turning God’s truth into a lie can be their motivation). This is why it is important for us to know the Word so that when we here something not according to scripture we will know how to respond. Also it is important for us to test what they are saying. After we have listen to them and to our own leaders (and even reading blogs like this one), we have to get into the Word for our selves. God will teach us His Word if we take the time out to study.
Know that you have not done damage to your self. You did not know. Now that you do know (and I pray that you make sure by tearing God’s Word apart and study this for yourself), how are you going to respond? What we do after we come into the knowledge of the truth determines if we sin or not (I am talking about knowing to do right then by choice don’t do it- James 4:17). That is how you can fix it. Once God’s Word (not me) has proven to you (after you study) that behaving in the above manner is not biblical nor taught in scripture, then simply train your self to stop. I use to do it so much that it took me months to stop using those terms, phrases, and cliches in prayer. Eventually it stopped and they are no longer in my vocabulary. I have made vow to only use biblical terms and not terms that I heard others say so that I will not fall into error (I don’t look down or judge those who do it. I pray that God will teach them the truth or bless me to tell it with love. My leaders still bind and rebuke, but I love them and I don’t judge them. Are they going to hell because of it? Probably not. Does it mean they are not true, holy or love God? No). I pray that you speak only what the bible teaches so that you can be approved by God, rightly dividing the Word of truth so that you will never be ashamed (2 Tim 2:15). At the end of the day, it is every man/women for themselves, because we are told in scripture to work out our own salvation with fear and trembling. (Eph. 6:5) We have the responsibility to get it right, even if they don’t.

This is what I want to hear, the truth, and the truth will set you free, what opened my eyes, when I read this passage and the auther says, the only way to deffend demons, and the only way they will flee, all depend on how obiediend you are to God,m praise the Lord for this eyeopener, these words change my live forever, to God be thw glory.
I never been demon possessed but I may face many many demonic strongholds and I believe in the “mind possession”, a lot of people are victims of “mind possession” that leads them to mental illness. To explain the secrets of demon possession, It does not matter whatever demons and evil spirits are real or not. For example, I have been told that sex is evil, disgusting, unclean and a sin against holy God, then when I have a child in my belly, and after this I begin to feel guilty, ashamed of myself, to hate myself and so on, this will lead me to mental illness and even serious illness like cancer, so I fell ill and to end up taking drugs and to commit suicide. You see, this is the demonic stronghold of guilt, shame and all negative thoughts. In fact I can create my own “demons” in my mind and to face my own “demons”. I can learn how to resist all the demonic strongholds and “mind possession”, I hope God will give me all the instructions on how to avoid all those dangers in spite of those demons often look for my weakness, but I can seek out their weakness. I hope God will give me extra instructions on how to avoid committing terrible sins such as idolatery, adultery, jealousy, anger and so on. I find demonic strongholds is so vast like a huge monster will trample over me. Demonic strongholds and mind possession are the true cause of suicide.

It, in addition to this one, has set me free! But I want to ask, being one who has prayed, thinking I had authority to bind and loose the enemy, his forces (of fear, doubt, poverty, lack..) etc, verbally (due to the scripture being taken out of context and taught in such a way), I’m now confused on how my prayers should be prayed. From what I’ve gathered in my study in the recent days is that we don’t need to talk or speak to the enemy AT ALL when we pray. I’ve slandered him definitely, because that’s what I’ve seen and I recently had to ask God, why are things in my life that I’ve “bound and loosed” still happening!? The site above and this one are the the answers as to why!!! (So Happy!)
I want to confirm, that when praying, we are NOT to speak to the devil or his forces of evil, forces of poverty, affliction, etc, correct? How do we respond when thoughts are planted in our mind such as, I’ll never be healed (just as an example)? Do we respond to “him” that “I am healed by the stripes of Jesus!” or do I tell myself this and meditate on that word? (I’m just trying to make sure I’m speaking to the right “thing” (my healing, satan/spirits or both)?
To answer my own question, from what I understand after reading this article and the link I posted above is: that we are to stand on God’s word. Refresh our minds with his word when the devil plants a suggestion in opposition with the word in our thoughtlife and go forth, ignoring the devil and the evil spirits, by not entertaining them with conversation(s) verbally, ever. Correct? Should we even say, “satan, I know this thought is of you and I resist it because I’m more than a conqueror” Is this ok, or again, do we not speak at all to him when we know it’s him? Great questions. I pray that my response based on the Word alone will give you much clarity.
I’m now confused on how my prayers should be prayed.
Jesus taught us that there is only one way to pray and that is to the Father (Matt. 6:9-13). We are also taught to make our prayers and supplications known to God and Him alone (Phil. 4:6). Our relationship is upward. Prayer is simply a conversation with the Lord. We are supping with Him and He is supping with us (Rev. 3:20). you are right we don’t need to speak to the enemy at all. We are instructed to resist him. Jesus taught us that in the wilderness. Jesus resisted him with the Word of God and then acted upon it by not giving in to what the devil suggested (Matt. 4). This is a wonderful example of faith working together with actions (James 2:20). Jesus was teaching us to cast down every high thing that exalted itself against the knowledge of God (2 Cor 10:5-6) by replacing it with the truth of God’s Word. This is how the enemy will always be defeated. He will keep coming back however. Remember that God has temporarily given him a position in the earth. He will always be the prince of the power of the air (Eph. 2:2). No amount of binding and loosing will ever change that. That is why scripture teaches us that he fled for a season after Jesus resisted him. Likewise, when we submit to God’s Word and resist the devil, he will flee for a season, but understand that he will always come back (Luke 4:13). It is his job. However if we do what scripture teaches he will always be defeated no matter how many times he comes back. When we do this, we are submitting to God and resisting the devil (James 4:7). satan is not defeated by our own words – by threats, slander, stomping on the ground and jumping on his head symbolically and all of that other stuff some of us were taught. It has no effect.

I really want to address this because this is a lie that we have been taught based on the teaching of the prosperity gospel or what I call the gospel of the flesh. There is no such thing as spirits of poverty or the devil “making” anyone poor. God has given each and everyone abilities (saved or unsaved), opportunities and the wherewithal to work with our own hands (Eph. 4:28, 1Thess. 4:11) and make decisions in life so that we may all have something to share and not have lack. Please read The spirit of poverty for more on this matter.
Now for your question, we are to follow the teaching of Jesus as I wrote about above. We are not to actually speak directly to satan is if talking to Him. Do not engage in conversations with Him. Chances are you will not win. He will beat us down with negativity so much so that we will start to believe it and become defeated. This is why scriptures teaches us to resist him. Not engage him, entertain him, commune with him, but to resist him (James 4:7). The only person we are to commune with is God (Rev 3:20)unless we are casting out devils. There is no other way but to speak directly to them. You are absolutely right. We respond to thoughts that did not originate from God with His Word. This is how we resist and cast down imaginations. We have to continually meditate on His Word (Josh. 1:8; Ps. 1:2) so that his word will be in us,that we might not sin against him (Ps. 119:11). We are to sing and make melody of things pertaining to the Lord in our hearts (Eph 5:19). By doing so we are not giving the devil a foothold or a place to cohabit with us in our hearts and minds (Eph. 4:27). We have to keep our mind stayed on Him, because this is how he keeps us in perfect peace (Is. 26:3). We have to remember to orchestrate our thought life in this manner for we are not ignorant of the devils’ devices (2 Cor. 2:11). Don’t let satan in to gain control of your mind and soul (emotions).

We are to go forth in the strength and power of the truth of His Word. When he presents a lie, you speak in your heart and mind or even out loud if you want, the truth. Meditate on it and go to the Father in prayer casting all that concerns you on Him, for He cares for you ( 1Peter 5:7).

It is good to acknowledge that the lie is coming from satan. Before we can defeat something we have to acknowledge that it is happening. Jesus did when he said get thee behind me satan (Matt. 16:23)and replaced the lie with the truth. This is the time when we immediately stop all activity and go into prayer. According to scripture (not according to what we are accustom to, what we were taught, or what our leaders are saying) and to be biblically safe and sound all of our conversations should be to God and Him alone. Go to God in prayer with everything, always (Eph. 6:18).
We should pray urgently like this: Father in Jesus name, you are holy and I am striving to be holy like you. There are thoughts that are being presented in my mind that I know according to your word you did not author. These thoughts are evil an full of lies. I know from your word that the devil is the father of lies. Father, these lies are….., but your word says this…… Father I believe your word and I put my trust in you. No matter what is happening around me, your word is true and sure, no matter what I am feeling, your word still stands and I will stand on your word. Thank you father that I have the privilege through the shed blood of Jesus to come boldly to your throne to find help in this time of my need. Thank you for reassuring me with the truth of your word so that I can stand against the whiles of the devil.
You can continue to pray about other things that concern you, give God the praise definitely and then start to meditate on scripture and most of all let God speak. Prayer is 2 ways. God wants to engage in a conversation with us. When you pray try to bring in your journal and write down what he is saying to you. Finally, keep your mind and heart on Jesus and rejoice. Do not act defeated or shrink back. Continue to have faith in what you prayed and believe according to his word. Get happy and move on. I say this because often when we pray, and the situation is still there and our feelings are still not where we want them to be, we begin to doubt again. This is the time that we should make ourselves happy by rejoicing in the truth and our sadness and doubts will be lifted.

This all makes sense to me and over the last few days while waiting for your response, I’ve already seen changes, just by praying differently and re-reading popular scriptures that have been misinterpreted or taken out of context and gaining new understanding of them, with God’s help.
I’ve been experiencing a tremendous PEACE after my prayers. How I was praying before was physically and mentally draining me, “handling” the devil with my “own” might, via slanders and speaking scriptures directly to him. As you said above, he would cast the scriptures down as soon as I would quote them with something negative. By the end of the day, I felt like I hadn’t even prayed that day and would feel even worse about situations. The same situations over the past few days still exist, but there’s a peace! I’ve meditated on Philians 4:8-9, along will equipping myself with the weapons/amor in Eph. 6 WHILE resisting and not speaking to the enemy and it has been a GREAT past few days! As a side note, my engine light in my car has cut off! It’s been on for a year! 🙂 So your response with a backing of scriptures could not have come at a better time and confirm the way we ALL should pray, excluding the devil!

Prayer is simply a conversation with God. It is making our requests and supplications known to Him and thanking Him for all of His many blessings. It is a time where God speaks to us as well. Prayer is not hard. We make it hard by trying to follow a prescription. The best example of prayer is the Lord’s Prayer. It is simple and straight to the point. I really hope this helps. Remember, our relationship with God is personal. God knows us better than we know ourselves. Give Him your heart. Tell him about everything that concerns you when you pray or speak to him (casting all of your care on Him) because he cares for you.

Thank you sooo much for your posting. Like so many others I was taught in the ways of binding evil spirits. This has helped me in so many ways. I was also binding and casting out the devil and his spirits every day and was getting tired. One day I told the devil to bring it on. What ever he had to throw it at me because my God would protect me. I now know that was absolutely not the way of spiritual warfare. I agree that we have to study the bible for ourselves, I love studying the bible, but sometimes don’t know where to look until wonderful people like yourself show me where to look and show me examples of teachings taken out of context and where they are all located in the bible. I have a couple of questions I have concerning things I was taught and what is true and where to find the answer in the bible and how it was taken out of context. I’m asking you because through you God has really shown me the truth. Thank you.
1. I’m not a seventh day advent but I believe that we must keep all of the 10 commandments including “Remember the Sabbath day and keep it Holy. The sabbath day is Saturday, and we should not work or do anything on this day and worship God. What about cooking or eating? When I asked my pastor this question he asked me if I believed in the seventh day advents. I said no but I do believe what the bible says. Then he quoted me the verse about finding a lost sheep on this day, and the verse that quotes about going and getting some corn from the fields to eat on this day as an argument. I don’t think it’s wrong to have worship service on Sunday, but God told us to remember the sabbath and keep it Holy.
2. My other Question is about musical instruments in Church service. In the old testament they used instruments that David made. In the new testament it states to sing with melodys from our heart. The bible doesn’t say anything about musical instruments in the new testament that I could find. The church I go to is a Penticostal church in Mexico. We have guitars, drums…etc I listen also to christiam music on the radio. Is this correct? Or does this upset our Father in Heaven?
3. My last question is about speaking in tongues They teach people to open their mouth and start uttering whatever sounds without thinking about it and this is speaking in tongues. And are taught to speak this way in the church and the pastor does and is not a language. From what I have read in the bible, on pentacost fiery tongues landed on people and they spoke languages different from their own, and languages others could understand. Also the Bible says that someone should not speak in tongues unless there is someone there to interpret it. To me just saying words in church like rooompapapapa dadadda……etc is not from the bible and not what God wants from us. Thank you so much for all you do. Hello Curtis, I am so sorry. Not to try to make excuses but really try to answer every post. If is is something that I have to really search the scriptures for it does take a while (not 3 months though). I have a bad habit of opening replies with the intention of responding, but life happens and I forget. Because the reply was already open I have no reminder to go back to it. 1. I’m not a seventh day advent but I believe that we must keep all of the 10 commandments including “Remember the Sabbath day and keep it Holy. The sabbath day is Saturday, and we should not work or do anything on this day and worship God. What about cooking or eating? When I asked my pastor this question he asked me if I believed in the seventh day advents. I said no but I do believe what the bible says. Then he quoted me the verse about finding a lost sheep on this day, and the verse that quotes about going and getting some corn from the fields to eat on this day as an argument. I don’t think it’s wrong to have worship service on Sunday, but God told us to remember the sabbath and keep it Holy.
PDCM: I totally understand your thinking on this, but we are under a new covenant. Not only are we under a new and better covenant (Heb. 8:6-13), but when reading the Old Testament we have to learn how to rightly divide it to determine how it applies to us as NT believers. Remember that the law of Moses and all that it encompasses is specifically for the Nation of Israel or the Jewish people, not us (Ex. 31:16-17). We are Gentiles. In addition the Sabbath was given only to them as a sign between them (the Jews) and God (Ezek. 20:12). As believers we have to understand that we are not a continuation of the Children of Israel nor are we a replacement. We can worship on any day of the week as NT believers because we have that freedom. Remember when the Jewish believers wanted to impose their beliefs and traditions on the Gentile believers in the book of Acts (15:28-29) and how they were corrected for it? The reasoning was this: the Gentiles did not know the Law. Not only that, but why impose a Law on them that the fathers/Israel could not keep themselves? Jesus delivered us from that and we now walk in that liberty.

PDCM: This is a good question. The bible has devoted an entire book on the acceptable ways in which we all (everything that has breath- Ps. 150:6) should do to praise God. When reading the Bible we can’t split it up, but read and understand it as the whole counsel of God and how it applies to us today. Just because the NT epistles did not mention musical instruments does not mean that God does not accept it. We have to remember that this was a time of severe persecution. If they were to have “church” the way we have it today they would have drawn unnecessary attention to themselves guaranteeing further persecution hindering the spreading of the gospel. It would not have been the wisdom of God at that time to make a loud and joyful noise. God accepts anything that we do as long as it is in line with what is taught in Scripture and as long as it is done unto Him (Col. 3:17)

PDCM: A couple of years ago I had the same question. I went to a church with my friend and the leader told us to start praying in tongues. No matter how much I tried I could not and I refused to mock God by uttering just anything. When I went to my home church I told my pastor and asked for his advice and he told me if the Spirit is not giving me utterance then don’t do it (Acts 2:4). As it relates to speaking in tongues in the congregation or assembly we are commanded in Scripture not to do so. We are to speak quietly to God or in a way that is not loud. We are not to draw attention to ourselves or speak over mike for all to hear like some do who are unlearned or who follow after tradition. The only time we are to speak publicly for all to hear is if there is an interpreter (1Cor. chapter 14)

Hi. Just a quick question: What about when Jesus said, “No one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. And then he will plunder his house.” Mark 3:27 & Matt 12:29? Also, John 14:12 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father”. How then would someone interpret that Jesus does not want us to bind evil spirits? (I ask this in humility as I really want to understand this 🙂

In this Scripture Jesus was simply trying to explain to them with an example that it is impossible for a kingdom to be divided and still stand. Jesus never bind demons, He always cast them out. In this Scripture and the corresponding Scripture in the book of Luke, Jesus was just giving a logical example of what a stronger man would do in order to plunder someones house. In this case Jesus is the stronger man who plunders satan’s house and Jesus proved it by casting out (not binding) a demon. This scripture was not intended for instruction for us to follow as it relates to casting out devils. In regards to demons, Jesus only had one instruction for his disciples to follow and it was to cast them out:
“And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease. Matt. 10:1
Just because Jesus used the word bind in Mark, does not mean we should run with it and use His example in an extra biblical way. Sadly we often do this. We focus only on what is on the surface instead of grasping the true meaning in context and with the whole of the bible. For example, in context we see that Jesus was talking about how a kingdom divided will fall. Now, if we take that example and keep it in context with the rest of the bible understanding that it does not mean that we are to bind satan, we see that it agrees with the works, command, and purpose of Jesus Christ. We are to follow the example and works of Jesus and throughout scripture we never find Him binding demons, he always cast them out. Jesus does not do partial work. When He sets free, we are free indeed. Biding does not make anyone free, it just silences and prohibits for a short time. That is not the example that Jesus set for us in His ministry and binding demons does not represent what Jesus said he came to do and what the book of Isaiah said His purpose was: Luke 4:18-19 and Isaiah 61:1-3

Just before I came across your post…I was dealing with a situation that my friend today told me I need to approach with binding and loosing. I have some really bad neighbors that keep me up until all hours of the morning and even after asking kindly to not be so loud, they continued…even louder….I had to call the police one time and now they are really loud. Since I live next door in the same duplex…it is very frustrating. Tonight the mother was drunk and really loud as well as her teenage son and his friends…they were cussing and yelling and laughing….so I remembered what my friend had said this morning and I printed out a prayer on binding and loosing and said it….and in less than 5 minutes…there was complete silence….I couldn’t believe it!! Not one sound!
Please explain this to me….and if this was not God stopping another night of torment for me…then who was it? Please don’t say it was coincidence…because I know that is not true…it was God…definitely. So how else would you have dealt with this kind of situation…what would you have prayed? And…why did this prayer avail much????

Sadly this has now even infiltrated into many conservative baptist churches, with a co-pastoring “pastrix” ending her last sunday sermon: “claiming” – “banishing” and “standing” against Satan and demons with her “words”! She spoke this directly from the pulpit. With nary a protest from the elder board or other pastors. This topic is even more timely in 2013. And growing in popularity.How bad has this become? My local church library is now a minefield of dozens of books and DVD’s promoting false teachings and false quasi-mystic praying formulas, with little if any discernment. And no “questions” about these books or teachings = wanted! Thank you very much! Those kind of “questions” are labeled as hate filled these days. No Bereans need apply. One of the other pastors preached a semon and said questioners/commentors needed to be told “it is none of your business”??? REALLY! I think teaching The Bible in truth instead of error (and thus pointing out these errors) is every Christians “business”! Thank you for this easy to understand post.
Hi, your argument shows that you are do a lot of research, but i just advice you not to have a biased approach in your treatment of scripture. You need to interpret the bible in the context of the whole truth. You should not mix correct interpretation with little wrong biblical interpretation. In fact an absolute lie is not as dangerous as little lie in the midst of truth because the wrong can be rejected even with people who may not have understanding when they later on get understanding. But you know what a little leaven does………

Thank you for you for this profound and enlightening word of truth. I was lead to this post after a friend of mine asked me to cover her son who has become rebellious and defiant to authority. I began praying and typed the words bind and loose concerning any demonic spirits I felt in my spirit that he was under, but I was stopped mid-sentence before I completed the prayer, and was compelled to look up the scriptural meanings of binding and loosing concerning demonic spirits, and yours was many of the sites I was led to. I leaned more to your site because of the word “Errors” concerning binding and loosing, and thus here I am. I thank God for allowing the Holy Spirit to lead me to all truth concerning this matter, although I will do more research and personally consult and study the Word concerning this matter, I already feel at peace in my spirit concerning what has been revealed to me here. Thank you for allowing God to use you to correct, enlighten, and teach the truth about His Word, and the false teachings many of us are given concerning religious practices being exercised in the church today. My friend in Christ! The Holy Spirit is the teacher and not man according to Jesus the Son of the Living God! Therefore your revelation bears witness with my spirit that is Truth in the revelation and power. Again we all miss it because we run the stop light which is in Red the Words that the Son of God spoke from the Father his witness and glory. Now here is the misdirection and I present it to you because since the Garden of Eden mankind has missed this, ” The Word was made flesh and did dwell among men and the Word was God his power Jesus the only begotten of the Father which came out of him. Now I don’t know but I am not a scholar but I know the words that Jesus spake are life and power. They needed no explanation by a layman. Jesus said I will send the Comforter and he will teach you all things and bring you into rememberance. If we stick to the Words Jesus spake he kept it simple and always pointed to the Father saying if you love me keep my commandments. That is the victory that overcomes evil in Jesus name!

Your article is not only easy to read and understand but it is also refreshing. I understand the Word of God to be that way. There is a certain release that is felt when you get the truth. I spent almost an entire weekend fasting, praying and binding and loosing spirits from myself and my family. To no avail I felt no difference no rest, no release. I spent another weekend fasting, praying and researching what I may have done wrong. I found that I was praying incorrectly among other things. I researched the binding and loosing starting with Matt 18:18. As I was taught I read ahead and behind the scripture. I was in shock. The topic had absolutely nothing to do with demons at all. I looked further and further even breaking down what binding and loosing meant. I prayed aloud and asked the Lord if I was actually praying to keep the spirits and loosing the good ones. My God, I’m trying to get rid of them not keep them! Then I searched the web to see if I could get a hit on Jesus binding. There were no scriptures that was found where Jesus was binding or loosing anything ( I wonder how that all got started anyway). However I did find this site and not only did it confirm the Word but you were very careful to note all the scriptures, the ones I had just read.

Gm! As I was posed with the question this morning about rebuking, I stumbled across your writing. Very good format and articulate. My question, and reason I could not finish reading yet, is two part. You referenced 2 Cor 10:6 as our “righteous lifestyle”, I believe as though I lean towards agreeing, it is so much more than just our lifestyles. The text in fact says “obedience” which is hypakoē in original text means submission. This doesn’t relate to just our lifestyles as many would picture it, how we live our lives, but also making disciples as we are commanded, loving our neighbor (those on earth) and being a living sacrifice. I’m not disputing but as I read your statement to another person that you just assumed it was known, what I have learned is assume nothing. That, not you or another person that teaches “part lie/ part truth”, is how these fallacies enter in. The second part is the question about another text you referenced, Matthew 12:29, Christ is giving the example of a “strong man” not to show His strength or that He is stronger, that would be boasting which is something He did not do. The strong man was to reference the earlier text v 28 where he states that if he casts (I agree with you here) out demons by the Spirit of God…”. That strong man represents the demon but I wondered how you came to that conclusion that it was Jesus or am I reading that correctly? Now, I am not disputing your speaking about the need to cast out, but I do say that Jesus in fact DID bind, not using that word, and those are the keys we have been given. I, however, also agree that binding and loosing is not for every “spirit in the air”. This is for specific instances. I know that. I have witnessed that. I have been instructed to do that. Satan, is not one that we must “bind up”, in agreement there too, for even the arch angel did not handle him on his own strength. That is confirmation for me.
